Nickel Test

The Nickel Test experiment aims to detect nickel ions in inorganic salts, specifically focusing on identifying fourth group cations. Nickel is a highly abundant transition metal widely used in alloys and electroplating. In its compounds, nickel typically exhibits a plus two oxidation state, forming distinctively colored salts like green nickel chloride.

During the experiment, students perform a sequence of identification and confirmatory tests. After evaluating the physical appearance and water solubility of the salt, they add ammonium sulfide to form a black nickel sulfide precipitate. Subsequent tests involve adding sodium hydroxide and ammonia, which initially yield green nickel hydroxide precipitates; the latter dissolves in excess ammonia to form a soluble complex. Potassium cyanide is then used to produce a green precipitate that also dissolves in excess reagent. Finally, the specific dimethylglyoxime test is conducted, yielding a characteristic bright red precipitate that definitively confirms the presence of the nickel radical present.
